Book 9 Odysseus Journey Analysis

The journey that Odysseus goes on improves his character by all of his experiences that shaped him into the person he is now. Book 9, the cyclops changed him because of the aptitude that he had to use to escape safely. Book 5, the nymph and the shipwreck taught him to be more careful about his surroundings. Book 11 the underworld made him judicious and unpretentious because of the talk he had with the dead. These journeys and experiences that he went through helped him shape into a person who is humble, cautious and brave. Book 9, the journey that adds to Odysseus’ intelligence. This journey changed him the most because he wasn’t smart he would have been eaten by the Cyclops. “I in the lead made five” (Book 9, Line 375). Odysseus knows that he is strong and a worthy leader to get his crew and himself to safety. “I’d smash him against the ground, I’d spill his brains” (Book 9, Line 511). The cyclops was stabbed in his eye with a stick by Odysseus and his men. After that the cyclops woke up and tried to look for them. Odysseus and his men escaped with the sheep, they all got under them so they could escape without the cyclops noticing. This part of the expedition adds to Odysseus’ character because it shows that he cares about his crew and is smart enough to get them out. The cyclops taught him how to be smarter and braver. He learned how to stand up for what he desired. Odysseus knew that he had to keep himself and his crew safe so made a plan to escape. The nymph and shipwreck taught him to be more cautious. He had to be aware of his surroundings and that’s the only way to be safe. The underworld journey taught him to be kinder and sympathetic.
