The honey bee has many species to its name, so it is quite difficult to find which species of bee has been put as endangered the name of the Bombus affinis (the rust patched bumble bee) is seen on the list of endangered in the United States. The bee has seen a sharp decline since the 1990’s. the bees pollinate around 1/3 of the crops of the United States, this makes it a concern seeing as the bee is close to extinction. But what has led to this point? there is a chemical within pesticides called neonicotinoids that seem to be causing a lot of harm to the bee. The Bombus affinis is more effective than most of the honey bee in pollination as the bumblebee in general can account pollinate …show more content…
The rusty patch used to have a range around the eastern part of the United states once was a common sight is now a rarity to find the rusty patch. The cause for the massive loss of life to the rusty patch has found multiple causes. the loss of habitat with the farms taking over the plains they once resided leaving its habitat far and little space as it once had. As mentioned before the overuse of pesticides that contain neonicotinoids has caused bee pollinating flowers to become harmed with the chemical leading to the bee’s becoming delirious which can lead to the bees taking back the pollen that contains the chemical back to the hive which slowly leads to death in the colony, or the bee can’t tell where the colony is, so it just wanders until it dies. Finding an alternative to the neonicotinoids or using less of it can be a step in the right direction in helping bee’s in general not just the rusty patch. Another problem that is hurting the Bombus affinis the parasites and disease. First the parasites what is it causing whole colonies to disappear there two that are known to be attacking the bee’s colonies such as varroa destructor (vampire mite). The mite is like its name feeds off the blood of the bee which weakens the workers and
