First, the fact that Bobby relied so much on his mom and dad shows very well that he did not come of age. The first thing is how much he relied on his mom. Through the first half of the story Bobby is living with his mom, he has to rely on her to help him take care of Feather, to support him, to get money from, and to help him learn from his mistakes. There are multiple times throughout the novel that Mary helps take care of Feather, he also relies on her to tell him what is right and what is wrong and to give him emotional support. This is proven by Bobby relying so much on his parents for support and help, that he could not cope with the situation he was in, and that he had to leave for a new place and have a new life. Bobby had to rely on both his mom and dad for support, criticism, money, and care. He did not cope with his situation which lead to his identity crisis, need of sympathy, and trying to balance his old and new lifestyles out. Bobby also had to go to a new location and get a new life to escape some of his responsibilities and problems. While Bobby did have mature moments and was responsible from time to time he did not come of age by the end of the novel The First Part
