Bob Ewell's To Kill A Mockingbird

Decent Essays
I am certain of the Ewells family members, Bob Ewell and Mayella Ewell lied for their own reasons. Bob lied about the court trial for three reasons, he is a racist towards the black community, and mad or angered that Tom is always helping out his daughter, and finally just to humiliate Tom in front of the whole town. I judge that Bob is racist towards Tom because of him having to live in a higher amount of poverty and filth than the black community. Reason number two is that Bob has a habit of making Mayella do all the choirs around the house. I instinct that when Tom helps her out, he gets guilt or less self-esteem when he sees a black man helping out his daughter. Knowing the Ewells, Bob could have charged Tom for rape just for the sight

Why would Mayella Ewell lie at the trial? First, is that she doesn’t want people to find out the truth about what happened. One reason is she doesn’t want her dad to beat her. She wants her dad to think it was Tom Robinson and she doesn’t to disappoint her dad. She tempted Tom.…

Then, Tom Robinson got to the stand and said the following after he was asked if he was paid for his services: “No suh, not after she offered me a nickel the first time. I was glad to do it, Mr. Ewell didn’t seem to help her none, and neither did the chillun, and I knowed she didn’t have no nickels to spare,” (Lee 256). Tom Robinson also testified about where the children were the day of the accused rape, and Mayella told him “they all gone to get ice creams… ‘took me slap year to save up se’m nickels, but I done it,” (Lee 258). When Mayella and Tom give their testimonies it shows how little the Ewells have. It also shows their standing in the community based on how people feel about them.…

Bob Ewell decided to hold the trial because he knew that he would win due to his skin color. In the 1930s, no colored person ever won a case and Tom Robinson was not going to be an exception. From my interpretation of the case it seems that Bob might have even thought that the town would appreciate him more for ‘saving them from a colored rapist’. At the end of chapter 26, Scout says that “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed.” (Lee, 1960, pg.…

For a person that I think is a mocking bird I chose Tom Roberson. Tom is a innocent african american that shares lots of the traits of a mocking bird. Also this book is during the time of discrimination on the blacks, so automatically he got treated poorly. He shows his character before and after the trail. Tom Roberson represented a mocking bird because his disability, his goodness, and how he died.…

As Lee writes, “[The Ewells are] confident that you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption—the evil assumption—that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber” (Lee D). Mayella could say anything about Tom and make the jury believe it’s true, because of the fact that Tom is black and Mayella is white. Because of this, Tom is falsely convicted of something he didn’t do, with evidence that proves what Mayella testified wasn’t true. Lee creates foreshadowing when she writes: “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…” (Lee D).…

The United States of America has a rich political history and a political victory story. The nature of politics that I am interested in coincides with John Ruskin's quote "what we think, or what we know, or what we believe is, in the end, of little consequence, the only consequence is what we do. " Our country declares that we all have a voice and should be heard when we want to express our political view. The character Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr. are men that live out the words that Ruskin's quote models. All believed that all men are created equal and each of their lives are examples of standing against racism and discrimination.…

Tom Robinson is a character who is argued to have been prejudged by the majority of citizens in Maycomb County. Due to him being a black person, he is a victim of oppression and racism. In the novel, many people make assumptions about Tom and assume that he did rape Mayella Ewell because of his colour. During Tom’s trial, Mr. Ewell is called as a witness, and he confidently states, “I knowed who it was, all right, lived down yonder in that nigger-nest, passed the house every day... they’re dangerous to live around ‘sides devaluin’ my property,” (Lee, p. 234). Mr. Ewell indirectly claims that it is Tom Robinson who raped his daughter as Tom passes the Ewell house everyday on his way to work.…

To Kill A Mockingbird was a splendid book that told the story of some children growing up in 1930’s Alabama. They book showed them develop character and wisdom as a side effect of witnessing racism firsthand. The death of the black man Tom Robinson in the novel was not detailed upon heavily, but it is interesting and thought-provoking to think about who was ultimately responsible for this death. Based on evidence from the book, Bob Ewell is the most viable candidate for who holds the most responsibility in terms of Tom’s death. Firstly, Bob Ewell was a dirty, wretched man who’s subpar parenting skills led his daughter to desperation.…
