Horseley Ironworks built the first iron steamboat that was used in the ocean. It had an innovative oscillating engine with good power. It was put together with temporary bolts and sent to London and put on the Thames River in 1822. The screw propeller was introduced in 1835 by Francis Pettit Smith. Screws were used as propellers, and during one of his testings a part of the screws broke off, and actually made it into a more modern propeller, and the boat went faster. John Penn was the man who perfected the oscillating engine, he was the engineer for the Royal Navy. In 1844 he replaced the Admiralty yacht’s engines with one of his perfected ones, and it doubled the speed of the yacht. This was a revolutionary moment especially for the Navy (Wikipedia …show more content…
There was a study in San Diego proving that fish in polluted water have more liver tumors, and more fin rot than fish in clean water. This affects the quality of fish that we eat, and makes it more dangerous to eat seafood (University of California 2010). Since 2010 engines have been created that reduce the exhaust emission. Some things that individual boaters can do to help keep the water clean are to limit engine operation at full throttle, eliminate unnecessary idling, follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, and preparing engines properly for storage in the winter. Improper refueling can also lead to leaks (EPA 2013). Although boats do pollute the water and our atmosphere we need them to transport our food and goods. If for some reason boats stopped shipping to Hawaii we would be screwed because almost all of our food is imported from the mainland, and we wouldn’t last very long. We will only know the importance of boats if we think about what would happen if they didn’t exist.
Over the thousands of years of the boats existence, the boat itself and its uses have changed dramatically. They went from transporting people to being used for sports and luxury. They make a huge impact on the world, and most of us do not realize how useful they are, and how much we rely on them. All in all the boat is one of the greatest creations ever
