The problem is that this Diamond conflict had been going on way before these mediums of awareness; actually the releases of this movie and song were dated as the issue was starting to be suppressed by government regulation. If these mediums were never produced Americans most likely would never have been aware about the actual price people have to pay over seas, including their lives so that Americans and other wealthy customers have the opportunity to purchase this expensive rock. The issue presented in the film Blood Diamonds, is much more than the blood diamonds, it is more so about the people who live in the diamond conflict areas and how little they benefit from it. Cecil Rhodes was the founder of De Beers Consolidated Miles Ltd. and eventually gained monopolistic control of the whole diamond market in 1888 (). He completed this by forming the London Diamond Syndicate, a cartel, who was a leading diamond merchant at the time that allowed Rhodes to match supply for the high demand. Syndicate provided him with information about the diamond market, in exchange the merchants were allowed to have a certain amount of diamonds from the mine. “Sir Ernest Oppenheimer was elected chairman 1929” and used the same marketing plan as Rhodes, “a single structure” (). He formed the Central Selling Organization (CSO) by bringing in more sellers and producers into the De Beers syndicate. When the Great Depression came around Oppenheimer was forced to close down many of his mines because the amounts of diamonds produced were way more than the demand (). In 1957 his son Harry took up chairman, he followed the single chairman marketing structure like his father, he also started the market campaign of the diamonds being brought to the United States. Harry’s campaigned helped to expand the market and allow the middle-class to be able to purchase diamonds.
