A Blind Beagle Summary

The Biography of a Blind Beagle “Winnie, where are you going?” This is a question that rings throughout my house at least twice a day as my dog wanders aimlessly around. What began as my little old beagle staring up at the bright lights in our kitchen ceiling as if there was something more fascinating up there than just small glowing light bulbs, led our sweet rescue to be diagnosed with Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome, also known as S.A.R.D.S., less than a week after the onset of her newfound light bulb fetish- hence the word “Sudden”.

Eventually cataracts were ruled out, but he still had no diagnosis. So we were sent on to make an appointment with an animal opthalmologist for more extensive testing. Meanwhile, there was an inverse relationship occurring in our household: Winnie’s vision worsened, and our worries increased by the day. Once we arrived at the doggy ophthalmologist three days later, the vet specialist did a basic evaluation and although the diagnosis had been narrowed down to two possibilities, the specialist needed to administer one final test to determine if it was a brain tumor or Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome.

One night, over the summer, my mom and I were watching TV downstairs and we were hearing bang after bang upstairs. I was terrified. I thought that someone was attempting a break-in from upstairs. Finally, my mom went to investigate. Her search was fortunately short lived as our so-called robber ended up being Winnie who, unbeknownst to us, found her way up the stairs and into the bathroom. Trying to find her way out, she repeatedly ran into the bathtub, producing repeated thumps that vibrated through the ceiling above us. Dogs, of course, don’t have to drive cars or do anything for themselves. Dogs already look to humans for every aspect of survival. It has been bred into their genes to rely on their masters for food, water, shelter, and love; more so over their own species. It made sense. It made it easier to accept the news knowing that her life wouldn’t be as different as I had feared. Giving us helpful suggestions about not rearranging the furniture and getting her accustomed to using the same noises for getting her to follow our voices- such as tapping on the glass on the back door to lead her outside- made the transition
