Female workers do not treat black male nurses like white male nurses. Black male nurses are sometimes excluded from lunch gatherings by coworkers. Black male nurses are stereotyped as dangerous and criminal. Also, black male nurses are usually seen as less capable and ethical. For example, even patients sometimes would not accept a black male nurse and would ask for another nurse. Even if black male nurses have qualifications and degrees, they are still considered less competent. Findings show that the job made even more challenging for black male nurses, so they cannot get promotion. In response of all these discriminatory treatments, black male nurses have to wear white uniforms to show their job status. Moreover, black male nurses have to keep a distance from female coworkers so they won’t be misjudged. On the other hand, white male nurses deny doing the feminine part of the nursing job to get promotion.
I agree with all of the findings of the research and studies described by Wingfield. I do not have any personal experience on this matter. The only thing I can say is that there should be rules and regulations that make sure nobody is discriminated based on their gender and race. Also, it would better if people learn to not pressurize men who work in traditionally feminine jobs. If men who work in feminine jobs do not face social pressure, more men might consider working in women-dominated
