This experiment was performed at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus on March 7, 2017. Pots were prepared using 30 0.95-liter black plastic pots. Each pot was labelled sequentially from 1 to 30 along with the soil treatment it would receive, either 100% vermiculite or 90% vermiculite, and the planting density, either 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 seeds planted. The 100% vermiculite soil treatment was then prepared by using a clean 0.95-liter black plastic pot and adding 15 pots of vermiculite to a large mixing tub. Once this was done, 2300 mL of tap water was also added to the mixing tub and mixed together until consistent. The 15 pots that were to receive this treatment were filled up to 10 cm from the top of the pot. This was measured using a metric ruler. For the 90% vermiculite soil treatment, 13.5 pots of vermiculite were added to the mixing tub with 1.5 pots of soil and 2300 mL of water. This was then mixed and added to the 15 remaining pots that were to receive this treatment, filling up to 10 cm from the top of the pot. The soil in each pot was leveled before planting mung bean (Vigna radiata) seeds. The number of seeds assigned to each pot were planted along with two extra seeds, which were used as a preventative measure in the case that some seeds may fail to grow.
