Birth Observation Essay

My freshmen year in my child development class, I studied birth order. Each week I observed the 3 – 4 year olds in the nursery. In the beginning of my study Ms. Mason was able to tell me the birth order of each child in the class. In addition, I also read studies about birth order. I found that the eldest child tends to be the most organized; they tend to be structured and conscientious. Whereas, the last born is outgoing and fun-loving. And the middle child tends to be people-pleasers and thrives on friendships. However, when I observed the nursery, I found that some of the first-borns were structured and cautious and others were outgoing. I also found that some of the last-borns were outgoing, while others were more organized and quiet. The children that followed the criteria for their designated birth order, I ended up using in my paper. …show more content…
Confirmation bias is the tendency to search or interpret information in a way that confirms one’s preconceptions. I looked for the children that would confirm the theory of birth order. I wonder how many people want to believe in birth order and look for traits in themselves to confirm the birth order theory? More recently, there have been more studies showing that birth order does not affect personality traits. “Birth order is a bit like a horoscope, in that it presents you with vague enough traits that it’s easy to project them onto yourself” (Beck, 2015). Again, as I stated about horoscopes in my last paper, I can see how birth order and horoscopes can elicit personality traits that are important to oneself. Personality tests, horoscopes, and reading birth order traits, may help a psychologist or a teacher discover what traits are prioritized in an individual’s

Future studies should examine the different family dynamics that go into play. Single moms or dads, blended families, same sex marriages, adoption, death and divorce can have a huge effect on the child’s personality regardless of their birth order. Adler did not address birth order effects in blended families, because they were uncommon in his time. However, they are much more common now.…

Summary and response. In the essay, “How your birth order influences your life adjustment”, author Lucille Forer points out the role that a child plays within its family group, and how its birth order determines the adjustment to its reality. Forer explains that family members have diverse expectations towards the identity and attitudes of a child; and how each child reacts to certain situations depending on how he might think of himself or how capable he might think he is because of the effects that its birth order has on its personality and behavior.…

Birth Order "The one thing you can bet your paycheck on is that the firstborn and second born in any given family are going to be different," (Voo 1). Doctor Leman, a psychologist that has been studying birth order since 1967 has noted this throughout his years of research. Whether first born, middle child, or the youngest in a family, there are going to be certain personality traits that are commonly found in a person depending on the order of their birth. For an example, usually it can be quite difficult to find a comedian that is a first born child (Cowley 17) because usually the youngest is the more of the out going person and not as much of a conscientious and structured person.…

Birth practices can vary by culture and two of the cultures that I found interesting to read about regarding birth practices are the Chinese culture and the African culture. In this discussion, I will describe a few of the beliefs and rituals of each and if these cultures are similar or different. The Chinese culture highly regards family as a vital unit of society and a birth is accompanied by certain rituals (Singapore National Library Board, 2013). In order to not disturb the fetus and help avoid injury or miscarriage, pregnant women are advised to refrain from any strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting, moving furniture, or outdoor work and avoid speaking offensive words and looking at anything unsightly.…

I feel that the United States has over-medicalized pregnancy and childbirth. It seems that most women living in the states don’t know there is a choice when it comes to birthing, this was also true for all my pregnancies. Ricki Lake mentions in her documentary, The Business of Being Born, that she had no idea there was anything different than having a baby in a hospital. Just like Ricki Lake, I too didn’t know there was any other choice. I was told the hospital was the only safe option and real legal way to have a child.…

Adler, along with other psychologists, argue that the psychological birth order of a child plays a larger role in the development of an individual’s personality (Adler, 1956; Manaster & Corsini, 1982; Campbell et.al., 1991). Since Adler’s initial identification of the relationship between birth order and personality, which he called birth order theory, dozens of psychologists have further investigated the correlation. This paper will review relevant studies and come to the conclusion that birth order does in fact play a critical role in the development of personality among the various social positions of the…
