Birth Defect In Babies

There have been an increase number of bodies that are being born with a birth defect known as gastroschisis. Gastroschisis causes the intestines and other organs to poke through a newborn’s abdomen near the belly button. The solution to this problem is to repair it surgically, but even with that the birth defect can be life threatening. For example, some children are left with a lifetime of challenges with digestion and eating, and some might have trouble absorbing nutrients. The number of cases of the birth defect has approximately doubled from 1995 to 2005. Since 2005, this problem is still continuing to increase for babies to mothers of every race and age group. And the scientists do not know why more babies are being born with this serious birth defect. …show more content…
It is also been said that women who drink or smoke do have an increased risk of having this defect with their baby and so do women who are pregnant at a younger age. According to the CDC, each year nearly 1,871 babies are born with this defect. The article mentions that they are doing a public health research to find out the main cause and why only some newborn are having this defect. This is a public health issue because the scientists do not know the cause or why certain women are at higher risk of having a baby born with gastroschisis. Over years, there has been increased number of teen pregnancy. Several women especially under the age of 21 are not aware of this
