Right to Treat or Pay First The fog was very thick in the morning as a nurse begins her journey to work. She takes her usual route which includes a brief stretch on the interstate. A few car lengths ahead of her, a tractor-trailer truck attempts to change lanes however; a motorcyclist was eluded from the truck driver’s sight. The two vehicles collided and the motorcyclist came to rest only a few feet in front of the nurse. She quickly exited her vehicle to assist the drivers to the best of her ability. The profit of insurance companies would be eliminated and would be able to be reinvested in coverage and advancements in medicine. (Pence, 2011, p.319) Employers that offer health insurance would also save money that could be recycled into the economy through spending or awarding raises. All Americans would receive coverage, therefore private insurance companies would be unable to deny coverage or charge extremely high prices to those with pre-existing conditions or at high risk for expensive claims. (Pence, 2011, p.320) Private insurance companies would most likely become extinct. This would highly affect the elderly population and those suffering from diseases that are disabling. The mortality of infants would also decrease as women would be more likely to seek medical treatment upon conception rather than avoiding care due to cost. (Pence, 2011, p.319) According to Rawls, justice was acquired when equality among all citizens was reached. Universal healthcare creates equality and therefore establishes justice. (Pence, 2011, p.322) Many Americans would be more acclimated to be compliant with medical advice and would actually attend primary care visits. Serious illnesses would have a higher chance of being diagnosed early in order to start prompt treatment to increase chances of remission.
