Chaparrals have different terrains. For example, they can be flat plains or rocky mountains and hills. Chaparrals are primarily found in California and North of Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Wildfires are very common since the climate is very dry and hot.
Climate and Location:
During winter, chaparrals can be cool and moist but rarely will it rain. Chaparral regions receive only around 10-17 inches of rain throughout the year and the average temperature during winter is 50 degrees F. During the summer, it is very hot, possibly reaching over 100 degrees F. However, it's not surprising to see a drastic change in weather overnight. Even during summer it is possible to see the temperature go down to 70 degrees the day …show more content…
Some animals seen, are nocturnal to avoid the hot sun during the day, and be awake during the cool nights. Some animals you should expect to see in this biome are jackrabbit, kit fox, cactus wren, puma, golden jackal, coyotes, alligator lizards, deer, and toads. They are all adapted to the hot climate by having to require less water, since there are droughts, having scaly skin, or specifically the jackrabbit has long ears to regulate body heat. Some birds are adapted to eat different foods year round based on the weather …show more content…
The terrain of the chaparral is dry and rocky, with poor soil quality and small-scale of moisture. The soil of the chaparral biome is dusty and dry. Also, the soil is susceptible to erosion due to poor nutrients, but below the layer of the soil is a thin layer of rocks or clay. That makes it hard for vegetation to grow.
Problems and Threats:
A few plants in the chaparral are adapted to survive through wildfires, but most are not which caused this region to lose plant species and seeds are not able to spread. The creation of human communities in chaparrals cause pollution which harms the animals and plants surviving in this biome. Adding to wildfires, humans also cause fires for example by leaving cigarettes or campfires while camping. By cutting down trees, nonnative plants grow in the areas that are more flammable. Many plants and animals are threatened when we create dams, and water divisions.
