Is Biomass a better source of energy than Geothermal for meeting Canada’s energy needs in the 21st century?
Biomass is biological material obtained from living or recently living (dead) plant or animal matter such as trees or waste that can be processed into fuel and heat. While geothermal energy is produced by obtaining the heat from the earth’s core but currently has no developed sites in Canada. We believe that biomass is a better energy source than geothermal power for meeting Canada’s demand in the 21st century.
Biomass is efficiently renewable, and abundantly available; unlike geothermal power which attributes to causing earthquakes due to surface intensity. We will delve deeper into these factors and prove why biomass is far superior to geothermal for Canadians and their energy needs. With the bloom in population and waste, the only way to lead a sustainable lifestyle in Canada is to use renewable sources of energy. According to the Canadian Encyclopedia the second most used form of renewable energy in Canada is biomass after hydroelectricity.

As Raphael Lopoukhine stated in an article called “Five reasons why geothermal energy is nowhere to be found in Canada.” published on February, 2014 she stated that “Geothermal may be competitive over the 30-year lifespan of a plant, but it is risky, comes with high upfront capital costs and a slow payoff at the end, making investors wary. The exploratory drilling for geothermal is as complex and uncertain as oil and gas drilling, but the resource at the end doesn’t return the level of energy density as a fossil fuel play.” She goes on to name many other persuasive and conclusive reasons. Including cost, no government interest, carbon levels and most importantly earthquake risk.
