Biology: Caulobacter Crescentus And The Swarmer Cell

Caulobacter Crescentus is a dimorphic, α-proteobacterium found in oligotrophic environments. Their dimorphic cell cycle produces two morphologically and functionally different daughter cells, known as the stalked cell and the swarmer cell. The stalked cell remains anchored to the substratum and is sessile, while the swarmer cell is motile. Upon chemotaxis, the swarmer cell disperses in search of nutrients. Once sufficient nutrients are located the cell cycle can continue. In the early phases of the cell cycle, the swarmer cell will lose its flagella and begin to grow a stalk. As the cycle continues, the cell will enter the early pre-divisional phase where it will begin to split and grow new flagella on the pole opposite to the stalk. As the

    Conclusion: The experiment has showed how some bacteria have become extremely versatile and able to live in many environments and how other have not changed much over the course of time. It has showed how use of sugar, growth based on enzymes, and ability to ferment as well as motility can help us identify multiple bacteria and distinguish them from each other.
