Mental illness has been defined in different ways in different times. Archeological finds from as far as back as 3000 B.C.E. have shown human skulls with holes in them, a process called trepanning. People that had shown abnormal behavior had holes cut in their skulls to let evil spirits. Hippocrates had believed that abnormality was due to an imbalance of bodily fluids. Although inaccurate, this was the first recorded attempt of a biological explanation. In addition, during the Middle Ages (influenced by the Roman Catholic Church) believed that mentally ill people were possessed by spirits so they were exorcised. During the renaissance, people with mental illness were believed to be witches and they were put to death through various ways. Abnormal behavior and thinking now is defined through several ways and criteria. As opposed to the past, it looks at biological and sociocultural factors as well.

The model is classified in to the biological model, the psychological model and the biopsychosocial perspective. The biological model explains psychological disorders as a result of biological changes in the body. The psychological model is further classified in to psychodynamic view, behaviorism, and cognitive perspective. Used by Freud and his followers, the psychodynamic view explains psychological disorders as a result of one’s repressed thoughts, memories and concerns trying to resurface. Behaviorists would say that psychological disorders are learned, while cognitive theorists would explain it as an illogical thinking pattern.
