The story “Biography of Yingying” by Yuan Zhen is both a failed love affair and a moral tale. At the beginning of the story, Zhang, a gentleman with “handsome appearance” and “refuse to become involved in anything improper”, felt in love with his cousin when he first met her at his aunt’s party (Yuan, 173). After numerous attempts, Cui Yingying finally agreed to meet Zhang. She told her maidservant to deliver a note to Zhang. On that night, Zhang climbed over the wall into Yingying’s room to meet her. Yingying was angry and told him that he was such a molest person. She hoped he would realized what he was doing was wrong and a bit ungentlemanly. Zhang never showed up again after that night.
