For instance, the condition often leads to a decline of an individual’s mental and physical health; impact their personal relationships, their education and even their employment. Many hypotheses suggest that eating disorders are a consequence of the mass media and the ideal body image (standard of beauty) since 80% of the patients are girls or women, commonly more influenced by beauty criteria. However, many studies have been done and prove the origins of the illness and how it grows. Hence, although the causes of eating disorders are not fully understood, research suggests that they are complex illnesses with a biological basis influenced by a multiple of genetic, psychological and socio-cultural factors. However, after many research, the causes of eating disorders are still confusing as it is a complex pattern that embodies psychological aspects. Many doctors and experimenters have put their thoughts together in order to define and give a strong hypothesis on the causes of eating disorders, as they remain unclear.

Eating disorders are considered mental illnesses and are defined to be 3 different types; anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.
