Billy Gilfoyle and his mom are spending the summer at Lake Katrine in a cabin that Dr. Libris owns. When, Billy starts reading the first book he notices that what he is reading in the book is happening on the island in the middle of the lake. Billy meets Walter, who is Dr. Libris’s next door neighbor and they become friends. Billy does some tests on Walter and figures out that Walter can only see and hear what is going on out on the island when he is on the island. Together Billy and Walter create tons of characters like monsters, the Space Lizard, the Three Musketeers, Pollyanna, and Tom Sawyer.
