First, Bilbo Baggins took up the mission because the song made him want to see beautiful places. The song of the dwarves talked about their long lost gold. It also talked about faraway, magical lands and great adventure. The song made Bilbo want to see the mountains. According to the text, “Then something tookish woke up inside of him, and he wished to see the great mountains, and hear the pine trees and waterfalls, and explore caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking stick.” This shows that the song made Bilbo Baggins want to see faraway places, he didn’t care for treasure. After Gandalf the wizard departed, the dwarves needed Bilbo to get them out of sticky situations. Bilbo saved them from spiders and elves and helped them get into the cave. According to The Hobbit, the dwarves said,”’ What is our burglar doing for us? Since he has got an invisible ring, and ought to be an excellent performer by now, I am beginning to think he might go through the front gate and spy things out a bit!’” This shows that Bilbo needed to do things for the dwarves, but even though Bilbo did all this for the dwarves, they weren’t satisfied and wanted him to do more.
