The saying, do not judge a book by its’ cover, is used to explain the need to look within a person to see who they really are. In the play The Taming of the Shrew by Shakespeare, the main characters -Bianca, Katherina, Lucentio, and Petruchio- choose whether they will love based on what they see or what is on the inside; their decisions affects the outcome of their marriages. Bianca’s marriage serves as a foil to Katherina’s marriage, revealing what creates a strong marriage, ironically in the end, it is not what the audience expects.

After hearing about Bianca’s marriage, Petruchio asks Katherina for a kiss. She hinders at first to kiss him in public but complies and calls him love. Showing her love for Petruchio, Katherina proves her obedience and put away her shrewish nature. However for Bianca, she turns her compliant nature to a disobedient one. When Lucentio calls for Bianca in order to show her obedience to him, Bianca claims “she’s busy and she cannot come” to her husband (5.2.82). Bianca’s inability to be obedient to her husband show that their marriage is not on a strong foundation, because Lucentio was only looking at the character that Bianca portrays instead of seeing her lack of compliance. In that time, a good wife is obedient to her husband; therefore, Katherina is a good wife and is in a good marriage. In conclusion, Katherina and Petruchio decide to not judge each other by their appearances, but they see each others flaws and use that to build a strong relationship. Bianca and Lucentio, on the other hand, decide to use the physical appearance as their base for their love. And it made their relationship problematic in the end. Katherina and Petruchio prove the saying do not judge a book by its’ cover because it is what is on the inside that really
