Winnie’s short-tempered husband becomes barbaric when he find Winnie singing with another man at dinner along with many other people. During this scene Winnie says to herself “And as I bowed and begged, cried and knocked my head on the floor, I was thinking, Why doesn 't anyone help me? Why do they stand there, as if I were truly wrong?” (Tan, 320). No one moves forward to help Winnie as she is impotent but she looks to her friend, Hulan, for help she turns away in fear of Winie’s husband. Winnie can’t help but feel the betratal from everyone present because no one arose to help her which only fueled her husband’s thirst for power. This is one of the many reasons why Winnie distanced herself from Hulan. Her closest friend always seemed to abadon Winnie due to her own selfish reasons while Winnie always helped Hulan. Another time when Winnie ran away Hulan’s purpose was to help Winnie but she still betrayed Winnie by not trusting her words. As Winnie narrates the story to her daughter she speaks “And then I heard Hulan 's small voice. ‘But you promised to be kind.’ So you see, Hulan helped Wen Fu find me. Of course, she was very sorry later on. She saw his promise meant nothing. He was not kind. I don 't have to tell you what happened” (Tan, 398). Once again Winnie is bound to her husband 's terror because Hulan did not trust Winnie’s story of her brutal and abusive husband. Winnie always seems to have conflicts and disagreements with Hulan in the present due to Hulan’s actions during their years together. For example, “I did not argue. I did not tell her how she always remembers things wrong, always better than what really happened. She does not remember: I was the one who gave Beautiful Betty the sewing machine” (Tan, 90). In the present Winnie no longer trusts Hulan and questions her every action wondering if there is betrayal and selfishness behind it. One must
