Bethany Hamilton: A True Hero

“Strive to find things to be thankful for, and just look for the good in who you are!” (“Bethany Hamilton Quotes”). These are the words of a very strong person who many look up, too. Bethany Hamilton is a very strong and determined person who many would call their hero, even with her disability. She was raised in a home of surfers and could not bare to lose her surfing. Bethany may have been bitten by a shark and live with no arm but she is a very fierce competitor. She is an individual that many think is a hero that shows people that they can do what they want if they strive to do it, even with a disability. To begin losing an arm can be very difficult. Amputations are the removal of a limb and are used in many different scenarios. An amputation can occur if there is poor blood circulation, severe injuries, cancerous tumors, infections, and many other reasons (“Statistics on Arm Loss”). Amputations are used in the military to this day. Each individual is different in his or her own unique way. She had a few influences and inspirations that stood out to help her. Her dad, Tom Hamilton, played a key role in helping Bethany overcome her condition. He never let her quit when she was unsure or disappointed in herself (“She’s an Inspiration”). Father Damien was her hero. He never let her get down or disappointed in herself. He helped her believe that God was with her and was going to get her through this rough patch of her life (Sandler 29). God was also a major person who helped her. She believed that he never left her side and helped her mentally, overcome her fear of failing or not being able to surf again. She believed that she influenced herself not to quit.
