Without the realization of Bethany being Elizabeth’s clone, her identity wouldn’t have been exposed, and all the puzzle pieces wouldn’t have matched for her to recognize the explanation beyond her parents’ actions with her unknown “sister”. The text quoted,” I’ve never fainted before, but that’s what I do now”. Although she was distressed for a while, eventually Bethany was “set free by the truth”, otherwise she would’ve been left lingering oblivious. “Double Identity” certainly confused me with the clones and made me consider my identity. The theme of this story -the truth sets you free- forced me to think deeper of what made me and how, similar to how Bethany’s real identity relieved her. Stated by Bethany, “ I am not trying to understand why I lived when the other clones died. I am just me.” (Haddix, 216) I would absolutely recommend this novel to all readers, especially those who enjoy mystery, since this book contains all.
