Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. Ken White received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Central Michigan University in 2001. He received his Masters of Education in Educational Administration and Supervision from Arizona State University in 2005. He holds standard certification in K-8 elementary education, Structure English Immersion and a principal certification. Throughout this course I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about what it takes to be an effective leader in Texas. Edgar Richard Huff III, my former Psychology and current Civics and Economics teacher, exhibits the most appealing qualities of leadership; dedication, perseverance, patience, and respect for others. Each year since becoming a principal, I work with my school council to develop leadership qualities for our school. The council works together to determine how and if these qualities need to be revised and updated based on the current needs of the school, studnets, and staff. Over the course of my seven years teaching high school social studies, I have had the opportunity to learn about the evolving roles and responsibilities of a school administrator from three amazing principals. Henry Kluttz, Kelly Withers, and Angelo DelliSanti have been excellent models for anyone aspiring to be an administrator. Having recently started my own journey towards this leadership role, my knowledge of what makes a great principal has grown exponentially. Having the opportunity to interview a pair of veteran elementary school principals through this assignment has been an eye-opening experience. My understanding is that a ‘cultural broker’ is that it is a neutral third party that can help both families and educators in all aspects of their time at the service. They may assist as negotiators by joining the cultural gap, discussing differences and similarities among cultures. They act with the purpose to reduce conflict due to misunderstanding and create change (Jezewski&Sotnik, 2001). Cultural brokers would have a superior knowledge of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, history, values and beliefs, and customary practices. They are there to help both families and staff during enrolment – with interpreting the information, forms, service policy and procedure and help with any concerns that may arise.…
My leadership philosophy is one that is rooted in the strong belief that it must be a continuous quest to motivate all students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and lifelong learners, while possessing outstanding character. This includes assisting students with discovering their talents and interests, therefore developing a love of learning, while developing into ethical, productive citizens.
