Columbus wanted to explore the new world because he believed that an expedition across the Atlantic was a shorter route to Asia, but in the end it was not a shorter route and he never did reach Asia. He did end up discovering two continents that were unknown to the Europeans. During Columbus’s expedition religion was present and known, in fact Columbus had made the statement “that it was by the grace of God that he discovered three and thirty-three leagues of Tierra Firm and seven hundred islands.” (Columbus, 7) During Las Casas’s time of exploration he encountered the depopulation of the new world because the Europeans had come in and taken over. In the beginning the Indians saw the Spaniards as angels, but their opinion of the Spaniards was soon to change as countless cruel acts of violence was brought upon them. The Spaniards took advantage of the Indians taking more than they were given. After this started to happen the Indians were trying to find ways to have the Spaniards thrown out of their lands, but nothing they were doing had seemed to be
