After reading the passage, I noticed the use and repetition of the literary device alliteration being used multiple times. Alliteration is the repetition of a letter or sound at the beginning of word. "Then he saw, The mighty water witch, and swung his sword..."(475-476) In this sentence alone, the "w" and "s" sound is repeated. In this passage, the sop emphasized the battle between good vs. evil. The sop describes Grendel's mother as a "water witch" being that she is dark, evil, and lives in a eerie and steamy lake. As he sinks in the waves, he finally reaches the bottom of the lake, and is taken by Grendel's mother. She grasps Beowulf in her fierce claws as Beowulf struggles to free himself . Grendel's mother brings Beowulf into a battle hall, but nothing could harm him. Not the waters heat, or even the ferocious sea beasts could harm the heroic Geat. At the beginning of the battle, Beowulf swings his sword in hopes of slaying the beast, but his iron sword bounces off. Grendel'a mother claws and scratches at Beowulf, not piercing through his armor, but definitely weakening Beowulf. Angry; Beowulf resorts to using nothing but his bare hands and brute strength against the monster. Grendel's mother get's Beowulf on his back, and is ready to finish the battle with a dagger to Beowulf's chest, but Beowulf's woven mail shirt stayed strong, and he was able to get back on his feet. Beowulf resorts to using a heavy sword that is hanging on the wall, a sword, "hammered by the giants, strong, and blessed with their magic." (514-515) Beowulf musters all of his strength, and stabs Grendel's mother in the neck, ending her life. Still angry, Beowulf finds the body of Grendel and cuts off his head. One of which was the sword of Beowulf. "...that Hrunting could not her, was useless now when he needed it."(480-481). Hrunting was actually the name of Beowulf's sword. In the Anglo Saxon culture, wars and battles were always occurring and actually looked upon as an event of honor and bravery. In battle, a warrior yields a sword. That possession of theirs was so significant and meaningful in value, that they often gave their swords names. Also in the passage, the sop states "...his feet stumbled, And in an instant she had him down, held helpless."(499-500) As the story progresses, "Once Beowulf was back on his feet and fighting."(512) This shows the true courage and strength that Germanic warriors possessed inside of them.
