In the Old English epic, Beowulf the epic hero is perceived as the hero because of his human like strength, courage, devotion, and loyalty. Throughout the poem, Beowulf encounters three major battles with vicious monsters. Beowulf is battling these monsters using his mind, there is a different weapon and different techniques, as the battle comes to an end Beowulf collects a trophy. The first battle between, between Grendel and Beowulf. The battle is believed to have tested the strength of Beowulf. As Gendel arrived late at night attacking Beowulf's men, he was expecting it to be that easy to defeat him as well. Beowulf was expecting the monster to show, as he went to grab Beowulf, Beowulf instead grabbed Grendel. Grendel slipped on the puddle of blood from the men he had earlier killed, Beowulf ripped his arm off when he then died. This battle was a fair battle, the both of them agreed not to use any weapons. Although, Beowulf did have the upper hand when Grendel slipped on the puddle of blood. The trophy that Beowulf claimed after the battle was Grendel's claw. The second battle, between Grendel's mother and Beowulf. Grendel's mother attacked the …show more content…
The third battle represents the end of Beowulf's life. Beowulf decides to fight the Dragon as a payment to the King of the Danes, although he knew the dragon had the upperhand because he could breathe fire. Beowulf knew this but he still insisted on defeating him, nothing stops an epic hero. The Dragon melted the swords with his breath, Beowulf's men all ran away, except one. His name was Wiglaf. Wiglaf helped Beowulf defeat the Dragon because he knew that he needed help. For Beowulf, this was the end. Beowulf left his crown and jewelry to Wiglaf. Beowulf wanted Wiglaf to carry on his legacy. Wiglaf collects treasures for Beowulf, as he is dying, that is the last trophy Beowulf
