Beowulf Essay
Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic poem about, a Germanic warrior named Beowulf, he sailed across the sea to the land of the Danes to fight against the monster Grendel. The story about Beowulf is one of the oldest poems, first told by the scops in 400 A.D. and finally transferred to paper in 1100 A.D. it has changed alot over the years from books and big screen movies. Although Beowulf the epic and Beowulf the movie share many similarities, the different portrayals of Beowulf the character, religion, and gender roles in both the poem and movie expose the values of the societies in which they are told.
The first example of the similarities and differences in the epic poem and the movie is the portrayal of Beowulf. For example he still seeking for fame and glory, he also boasts about himself, and is immensely strong. In the Beowulf passage and movie they throw a party in Herot, where he tells the tales of the victories that he won against monsters and demons. Although, there are some differences between them, an example of this is, in the poem Beowulf was seen as a perfect being but in the movie he is flawed. In both Beowulf poem and movie women were minimized due to the strong characterization of the roles of men. For example, in the poem the hardly mentioned any women. Furthermore, when they introduced Grendel's mom they described her as “No female, no matter how fierce, could have come with man’s strength fought with the power and courage men fight with” (400-403). Yet, in the movie women had more of a storyline, for example they gave Wealhtheow a more influential role and also, Grendel’s mother was given . This proves how women have become more influential in modern day
