Benvolio As The Peacemaker In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

Benvolio from the House of Montague introduces friendship into the beginning of the play. His name means “peacemaker” or “well-wisher,” which fits his personality. In Romeo and Juliet he serves as a peacemaker and is very close to Romeo. When the Montagues and Capulets had a brawl in the town, he said that he only “...drew to part them” (1.1.110). When Romeo was lovesick over Rosaline, only Benvolio knew where Romeo was and what was wrong. When Romeo came and Montague was going to ask him what was wrong, Benvolio said “See where he comes. So please you, step aside./I’ll know

According to the excerpt from scene one, act one of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence starts off by explaining the dilemma at hand to Benvolio, “Both by myself and many other friends. But he, his own affections' counselor, Is to himself—I will not say how true, But to himself so secret and so close, So far from sounding and discovery, As is the bud bit with an envious worm, Ere he can spread his sweet leaves to the air, Or dedicate his beauty to the same. Could we but learn from whence his sorrows grow. We would as willingly give cure as know” (Shakespeare 1.1.136-145). Benvolio responds with: “See, where he comes.…

The modern day society looks around and sees the connection of love and conflict everywhere they go. Even love and conflict seem like opposing forces they have properties that tie them together like the very fact they are opposing forces, love is a very disagreeable topic and many other people will have opinions and think different about love, also love blinds people and the people can get so wrapped up in love they don’t focus on things they should which all of these in turn all of these can easily lead and cause conflict.…

Shakespeare uses Mercutio’s blunt nature to place emphasis on Romeo’s role of a blind lover. Romeo is fanciful and fashionable as a young lover with idealistic concepts of love as he is only able to express his love for Rosaline through figurative language; describing his state as “nor mad, but bound more than a mad man is: shut up in prison, kept without any food, whipped and tormented…”. He denies on numerous accounts that love has made him delusional, but on the contrary, it’s the “religion” of his eye. The passionate response he gives when rejecting Benvolio’s advice to replace his love for Rosaline with that of another, highlights his immaturity and inexperience as a lover. However, it is not until Romeo lays eyes on Juliet that he becomes aware of how artificial his love for Rosaline was as he questions, “Did my heart love till now?…

Juliet’s rebellion enrages her father to a degree to which he becomes cruel and disbelieving of anything that she has to say. Therefore, when forsaking her identity by defying her father, Juliet causes a conflict of trust between the two of them, thereby putting Capulet in a suspicious state of mind. Likewise, Romeo’s broken identity results in a monstrous conflict. His determination for peace with Tybalt, is the opposite of what Mercutio- Romeo’s loyal friend- has in mind, who rather thinks of this approach, as “calm, dishonourable, vile submission!” (3.1.70).…
