Bennett's Monologue

“Mom said she would take care of selling the house on her own. I think I’m only going to stay a few more days. I understand if you need to go back sooner.” Bennett was snuggled into Cole’s side on the couch.
Jase had fallen asleep in Bennett’s old bedroom looking at her childhood pictures. After playing with most of her old toys, he didn’t seem to want to leave her room or her side.
“I think we’ll stay. You will need help moving everything and I have a truck to haul the furniture to Goodwill. I can even haul some of your things back home for you, if you need me too. And if I’m going to be honest, I don’t want to leave you here with that dirt bag Vance coming around. I didn’t like the vibe I got from him.”
She leaned closer and kissed his

I knew he treated me bad sometimes, but he treated me good sometimes too. I thought I was falling in love with him. Then one day he just dropped me, and he disappeared. I really thought I would never see him again. But a few years later he showed back up. I know I’ve got to be the most idiotic person, but I jumped at the chance to take him back. He said all the right stuff at first, but he eventually went right back to the way he was before, maybe even worse than the first time. It was too late by the time I realized it though, because I was pregnant.”
This is where Cole’s eyes bugged out a little in surprise. She had to keep going, get it all out. Even if he ended up losing interest in her too.
“The day I found out about my pregnancy I saw him at a flower shop and wondered what he was doing. So, I followed him. He was going home to his wife and kids. He was married the entire time we were together and I didn’t know it. He lied to me from the very start. He made me an accomplice in his affair. I was so broken hearted over being the other woman, over being cheated on and cheated with.
I ended up losing the baby, not because of him, because of a different reason. Dad and I got into an argument about it the day left. He said it was for the best I lost my baby. I was so angry with him that I’ve only spoken to him a few times

He must have cheated on his wife.
‘It’s more than just that, but yeah.” He took a deep breath as if preparing for something painful, like a punch to the gut.
“Maybe I don’t want to know.” She said it tentatively, knowing she would wonder what it was if he didn’t tell her, but wanting to stay the way they were. She had a feeling whatever he was about to say was going to change them.
He took a deep breath and told her the truth. Every ugly detail about that night, the night he cheated on his wife. About celebrating his promotion with the guys from work and the drinking getting out of hand, about waking up with Emma. Not remembering the act, but knowing it must have happened. She seemed to be taking it ok, until he told her about the birth of his son the next day. Yes, his wife was pregnant when he cheated. Her eyes turned angry, he could see why. What he had done was despicable.
“I can see why you didn’t want to say anything.” She started to say, but he interrupted.
“That’s not all, it gets worse.” The next part was worse… much

He had his mother call me on a three way call to tell me what had happened. Supposedly one of his baby mothers had called the police on him. Supposedly one day while he was laying on her living room floor, she walked past him and intentionally stomped his hair and when she tried to take off running, he grabbed her by her hair. She called the police, and filed charges against him.…

As Chance secured the buggy, he watched Kat spread a blanket on the ground. She sat down, pressing her blue calico dress next to her ankles. Perhaps the mild April air reminded him of home, but somehow her simple action took him a lifetime away, to another woman, to another time, to memories he’d always hold dear to his heart. Thoughts of his own wife made him wonder how Jake had ever let Kat get away.…

Today is going to be just like any other day, I sketched in my morning journal. The morning Baltimore sun shone past the skyscrapers of downtown, and light protruded through the silk blinds that covered half of the picture window in my room. I rose up from my queen bed. The sheets had become untucked and the comforter lay halfway off the edge. My back rested against the mahogany headboard with my head fitting perfectly between two of the wooden posts.…
