Bennet Omalu Bennet Omalu is a Medical Professional Doctor. He was born on September 1968 during the Nigerian Civil War. He was born in Nnokwa, Nigeria and is the sixth child out of seven. His father's name is John Donatus Amaechi Omalu, an civil engineer, and there is no show of who his mother is. Omalu discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in former football players, having years of denial from the NFL. Omalu graduated from the University of Nigeria’s medical school before he had moved to the United State to continue his training. The conflict of the Nigerian Civil War had forced his family to vacate its gated compound in the village of Enugwu-Ukwu. He then finally identified microscopic findings in Webster’s brain that led to his discovery of a variant of a disease that was found in boxers before, and which gave the name chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Omalus discovery would change his life for good and put him in the crosshairs of one of the most powerful corporations in America, the National Football League. Omalu then started to find evidence of CTE in retired NFL players like Justin Strzelczyk, Terry Long, Andre Waters, and Tom McHale. The disease was found in almost 90 NFL players including legendary safety Dave Duerson and hall of famer Junior Seau. Not only was it found in professional athletes but also in 2007 and 2010 he discovered it in the brains of Vietnam and Iraq war veterans who suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), one which had committed suicide. Ever since the discovering and diagnosing the first known cases of CTE, Omalu has devoted his life trying to help those affected. Omalus work has revolutionized understanding and treatment of all types of traumatic brain injuries with applications and translations in public health management, public policy, and sports administration.
