Benjamin Franklin was not only one of the founding fathers of the United States, he was also an engineer. He was the man who developed a working electric motor in 1748 and prior to this, he created the Franklin stove in 1742. Most people in America warmed their homes by using a fireplace which was dangerous and expensive. His invention allowed people to warm their houses in a safe and cheap way. He developed his invention by designing a freestanding cast-iron stove however; there were major flaws in the design as smoke would come out from underneath the stove instead of the top. Anyhow, this was still safer to use than a fireplace. During the 1740’s the weather was incredibly cold therefore, Benjamin Franklin’s contribution was extremely important
