For obvious reasons students who skate will definitely be safer skating at the skatepark. But less obvious benefits can include students becoming more active and coming together as a group. For the universities benefit, building the skatepark green can help the universities reputation. It could possibly bring more students into the University, which would bring more money in. Studies also show that the community will benefit economically. Theoretically “When a skatepark opens… draw folks from the outlying communities to come bring their kids to the skatepark, do some shopping, maybe have lunch, buy some gas, ect.” (“The Top 6…”). All of these effect the community, University, and students in positive ways, but there are myths that are attached to the thought of building a skatepark. “The myth surrounding skateparks is that they are a breeding ground for crime and other illicit activities” (“The Top 6…”). In this case, it actually usually causes the opposite, “…when youth have nothing to do or nowhere to go – that is when they cause trouble” (“The Top 6…”) Students who have nothing else better to are usually the student who will cause mischief. Since the skateboarders have nowhere else better to skate they are more likely to cause damage and vandalism. This is why students are causing damage to the University. Building …show more content…
There are many steps to be taken as well as certain aspects that need to be accounted for. First step that really needs to be done is research, research what, where, when, size, cost, and all obvious reasons. When looking for a space to build a skatepark someone also must take into account of drainage, soil conditions, size, any constraints like trees or pipes, ect. (“How Much Do…”). When researching someone may also find different ways to different ways to save money like “building on an existing slab, using in-kind material donations or using recycled materials” (Dennis). When looking on the layout of the campus the most obvious space to build a skatepark would be next to the Ping Center. The ping center is really the space for all active activities so it seems like it would be the perfect place to build a skatepark. Next to the Ping Center a little area probably close to an acre of land. The area is open but will need a little bit of demolition of the walk way going through the area. The University, instead of getting rid of the walkway, they can also build the skatepark around the walkway and other trees in the area. The next step after researching what, where, when size, and cost, you also have to design the skatepark, which will need even more research. After making a design plan, you need money to build it. With obvious permission to build the skatepark the University must find ways to pay for the building of the
