A common misconception is that many online students spend all their time in front of the computer. According the 2008 Michigan online learning report, many students have a combination of courses that are taken online and in the physical setting. Another common myth is that online learning is “teacher less”. Teachers who are used to the traditional lecture based lesson are receiving professional development to adapt to the changing educational system. The transition for teachers can be confusing and unsure of their role.
The online teacher’s role covers many different areas, their priority would be to personalize the learning for each student based on needs and interest. The teacher must constantly assess students’ needs with summative and formative assessments. They should also use the data received to move students on to the next level. The teacher takes on the role of the facilitator because they basically facilitate group discussions and guide students in the decision -making process. They encourage project-based learning and provide students with feedback and communication on their progress.
The student has a role as well; the student must be an active learner. As the teacher facilitates the lesson, the student is responsible for completing assigned work, conducting research, answering discussion questions and being an independent active
