Will mandatory voting save American politics? According to Meghan Foley, the problem is the voter turnout is low and it is socially biased. Mandatory voting will violate the American people’s constitutional rights. The problem would be that there would be ignorant voters and Obama wants to adopt mandatory voting. Would there be a “none of the above” option? If so, what would be the point of making voting mandatory? It is against human rights to make voting mandatory.
As a matter of fact, all the countries who do have mandatory voting, are countries that are the least free. Such as, North Korea, Dominican Republic, Egypt, ect. The list can go on. President Obama stated “ Other countries have mandatory voting.” Just because other countries have it, does not mean America should adopt it. The American people do not want to “fit it” with other countries. The American people want one thing and that is freedom. “The president is wrong. Compulsory voting is not just unwise, it is unconstitutional (Olson). The First Amendment covers that the people have the right not to vote. Countries have cruel and unusual punishments for the citizens who do not vote. Those citizens are not free.
