Helping other people in need can be a joyful experience, and something that many people believe is worth their time and effort. Some people volunteer because it makes them feel good about themselves. Other people volunteer to make themselves or their organization look good. Many people are required to volunteer due to court-ordered or lawyer-referred community service. Still others volunteer because they are in various clubs that require volunteering as part of the membership. Clubs such as the National Honor Society and Student Council both require you to get a minimum number of volunteer hours to be a part of their organization. When I talked with Lara Gay, the Associate Director at Community Link, she stated that their biggest need donation wise would be personal care items. This is due to the fact that personal care items can be expensive and cannot be bought with food stamps. Another thing to be learned when training to stock shelves is they will not accept cans with dented rims as the seal can be broken and the food could have spoiled. However, they will accept and pass out expired cans of food up to five years after the expiration date. Volunteers fulfill orders and carry the requested items out to the cars. The volunteers track the inventory by weighing the food and supplies when the food and supplies come into and before they leave the building. Also, the volunteers are encouraged to check ids of the people picking up the items. One reason is to keep other people from driving up and collecting food they did not qualify for. The main reason for checking ids is to ensure the orders do not get mixed up, and people do not go home with the wrong groceries and
