“The definition of a volunteer is a person who donates his time or efforts for a cause or organization without being paid.” http://www.yourdictionary.com/. Helping other people in need can be a joyful experience, and something that many people believe is worth their time and effort. Some people volunteer because it makes them feel good about themselves. Other people volunteer to make themselves or their organization look good. Many people are required to volunteer due to court-ordered or lawyer-referred community service. Still others volunteer because they are in various clubs that require volunteering as part of the membership. Clubs such as the National Honor Society and Student Council both require you to get a minimum number of volunteer hours to be a part of their organization. Whatever the reason (or your reason) to

When I talked with Lara Gay, the Associate Director at Community Link, she stated that their biggest need donation wise would be personal care items. This is due to the fact that personal care items can be expensive and cannot be bought with food stamps. Another thing to be learned when training to stock shelves is they will not accept cans with dented rims as the seal can be broken and the food could have spoiled. However, they will accept and pass out expired cans of food up to five years after the expiration date. Volunteers fulfill orders and carry the requested items out to the cars. The volunteers track the inventory by weighing the food and supplies when the food and supplies come into and before they leave the building. Also, the volunteers are encouraged to check ids of the people picking up the items. One reason is to keep other people from driving up and collecting food they did not qualify for. The programs consist of Emergency Food Boxes, The Community Kitchen, Ck Catering, Child Nutrition Programs, Hunger Heroes, and The Mobile Pantry. The Mobile Pantry is an extension of the emergency food box program and gives individuals, who live in rural areas the opportunity to receive food boxes by bringing them to these communities. Once a month on a Wednesday, a St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance truck will be parked outside a selected school, which would be filled with pallets of nutritious food and will be giving them out to deserving families within that community. Even though, this particular program has increased to over 30 sites in both rural and urban neighborhoods it is unfortunately the lowest funded program St Mary’s offers, so with your gracious donation of $75,000 we will be able to expand our highly demanded services to more than 35 other neighborhoods, just to display how much our program can impact a person’s life, I would like to you present you with a testimonial from one of our clients. A while back ago, the pallets used to be shipped to the store, where store employees where make the care packages to send to the food backs. However, the progress had changed, where the store would have barcodes for a care package and customers can choose to buy a care package by scanning the barcode. Then Safeway will send the care package pallets directly to the food banks. These food banks include Second Harvest and Sacred Heart. Employees have to keep track of how many care packages were brought, which is the reason for the annual holiday meeting.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

Volunteering should be viewed as equal to donating since not everyone is able to donate depending on their cost of living and income. These individuals use their paychecks to support their family’s basic necessities to survive and volunteering may be the only good they can do. On another note, individuals can also pursue a career they enjoy with an average income rather than an unhappy, well-paid career and still be able to donate along with volunteering to maximize their impact which will benefit them along with the charities they donate and volunteer their time…

There are various ways to give back to others; whether it’s through donations or volunteer work they can all make a positive impact on the greater community. Personally, I believe the best way to enrich others’ lives is by donating your time. I’ve often been asked, “How many hours of community service does your school require? “Unfortunately, my school does not require volunteer hours; therefore there is noticeably very little youth involvement in our community. I believe volunteering should be done by everyone, even if it’s not required.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

Over the years, I have volunteered my time to many service projects in our community. One of the projects has been being the American Red Cross Blood Drive coordinator for our Student Council June 2015 and January 2016 blood drives. This required me to schedule people to work at the blood drive and to call people asking if they are willing to donate. Another one is a service project for National Honor Society. Twice a year we pick up trash along a specified section of highway.…
