Benefits Of Becoming A Residential Assistant

Decent Essays
I anticipate my lifestyle changing a small bit, if I was to become a Residential Assistant. Although the position of being an RA comes before any other commitments, I feel that it will still be possible to balance my social life and continually see my friends. The only main change I foresee is that I will have to watch how I act and what I say. I need to set an example and be a role model. People cannot do that if they act irresponsibly and negatively with their friends or residents. On another note, my time management skills will have to improve if I acquire this position. If I perfect my time management, I will be able to study more efficiently and balance the RA position with school work. I can already manage my time pretty well, but improvement

My first year as an RA, my staff had monthly bonding days and that contributed to the success and cohesiveness of our staff. I believe that an open door policy is necessary for any RA or HR to have and that is one of the only ways it is possible to get to know everyone in the building. One of my personal goals for next year is to become closer to the staff who can help me or the residents in my building. I regret the fact that I have not made more of an effort to get to know the staff in the residence life office and our cleaning lady, Trina. That is something I will be working hard on this semester in order to have better connections to maintain the success of the hall.…

As an RA I was always told that it is like being in a fish bowl. When I am in the halls and on campus I am expected to act a certain way because my residents will be watching me as an example. When I was on duty I was expected to act a certain way and do my role as a resident assistant like rounds, bulletin boards, writing people up, and taking care of students ' issues. Outside of a resident hall or campus setting these roles would not make sense. Like it would not make sense for me to write up my family for being loud during quiet hours, because it is a different social setting.…

Other might think that we go through this group interview process, an individual interview, and we're in. On the contrary, the class its self is a workload. I would have never imagined that the class would have been that intense.…

During my time at the residential home I learned that communication is one of the most vital skills that any care provider must have. They need to be able to communicate with both the residents and their team to enable them to provide the best possible care while making the residents feel comfortable. I believe that I had achieved this by the end of my time there as I had helped with the care of some of the residents and I felt I had gotten to know some of the residents on a personal level. I also feel that I developed good observational skills because I often had to work out what the residents wanted because most suffered from dementia and often did not have the ability to comprehensively tell me what they needed.…
