For my research topic I am focusing on the benefits of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This issue has been proven to very controversial. I plan to explain the overall benefits of certain elderly care in my paper, product, and portfolio. First, I started with my letter of intent. My letter of intent explains my topic and why I chose it. I also explained what my product will consist of. Then, I began to search for sources. I recorded my sources on a works cited page.
In late September, I went to Davis Nursing Home Community Center in Porters Neck, NC. I made an appointment with Mrs. Heidi Drupell. She is the director of all registered nurses at the facility. On this day, I asked her many questions about her professional opinion on elderly care. This opportunity was very

My goal is to teach a health science class. I also emailed Mrs. Angie Barr to set up appropriate hours for volunteering throughout the semester. I plan to prepare an information event for the residents sometime in November. I will be planning a bingo or board game night. I feel this event will make me become a better leader and volunteer. I expect to receive lots of help from my mentor, interviewer, and advisor at Laney High School.
So far, I have not encountered that many difficulties. I have found an abundance of sources and information for my research paper. I have just turned in my research paper, and now I need to achieve my next goal towards my Graduation Project. For the past two years I have worked at a local retirement home in the dining room. Although the residents are not my patients, they still look for that personal connection. Once I took a few extra minutes out of my day to talk about a TV show with a resident. Now this may seem like a simple gesture, and truthfully it was, but to that resident is meant a whole lot more. At the end of our conversation, she told me that the past five minutes made her happy she got out of bed.…

Today’s goal was to introduce me to the site, the people that work in my department, the resources available to workers, and current projects. My volunteer supervisor, Geraldine Baptist, showed me around the hospital, specifically where I would normally sign in and sign out, the cafeteria, and the Occupational/Physical therapy outpatient department. Upon arrival at the OT/PT department, Ms. Baptist introduced me to the front desk secretary, Mauracell, a sweet, openhearted young lady. Mauracell warm welcoming made me extremely comfortable, and all anxiety was put to ease. Mauracell showed me around the office and work center, then introduced me to each person present and gave me a description of what types of things they work on.…

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

Today I drove to Minden Outpatient lab the girls there were nice and willing to teach me and showed me how everything worked there. I got a lot of draw there as the patients were nice to let me draw on them. Most of the people here were elderly and they had great stories of survival and how they had battled cancer. You could tell how alive they felt by the way they expressed themselves, it gave me another reason to be thankful for. I learned once more how important it is to properly identify the patients.…

Becoming an AGPCNP will provide me with the knowledge and training to safely and effectively treat adult patients across the lifespan. Although I entered this program planning to work as an FNP, experiences during the pre-specialty year have confirmed my passion for the adult patient. Specifically, I hope to serve rural communities as a primary care provider, focusing my practice on the management of chronic disease in older adults. My passion for older adults is rooted in the experiences I had throughout the summers of my undergraduate career. I spent my summers with a nonprofit in rural North Carolina partnering with churches, social workers, and businesses to complete home repair for low-income families.…

In the last five years I have worked and spent time with older adults from different settings, some who are healthy and engaged in all areas of their lives, living independently and contributing to their community. I have also spent time with older adults who are determined to live out their years in their own home despite chronic pain, disease and social isolation and finally I have worked with older adults living in aged care facilities who have multiple conditions, prescribed multiple medications…
