One of the things that I noticed about Anne was that she seemed to be very stubborn. Once when arguing with the adults, she exclaimed, "I'd cut my throat first! I'd open my veins!" Anne always wanted to get the last word in an argument, regularly prolonging it by doing so. Everyone else in the annex constantly argued with Anne, and she regularly fought back. When the adults suggested that Anne should act like Margot, she immediately protested and fought with them on the subject. Anne also argued with Mr. Van Daan when he tried to make her stop talking. In my opinion, her optimism was proved right from the start when she said, "You know the way I'm going to think of it here? I'm going to think of it as a boarding house." Rather than sulking about being trapped in the Annex for a long time, she tried to make the best of the situation. Anne was the one who was always laughing and joking to the point where it may have annoyed the others rather than amuse them. In the beginning, Anne’s attempts at joking upset Peter, who she usually joked about. Though at times she may have been reprimanded, frightened, in desperate situations, she was almost always bright and happy and she always tried to cheer others
