Growing up in a Spanish household and around spanish speakers gave me the opportunity in life to fluently speak and understand two languages. This is not only a huge privilege but, more so a power that not everyone has. When I first started school I did not see my ability to speak spanish as a power, but now that I am older and in the working industry I realize that speaking spanish is a huge advantage. Being bilingual has plenty of benefits, but at time also has its drawbacks. Yes, we can understand another language and are able to travel to spanish speaking countries, however; growing up speaking one language only and then trying to learn the other abruptly does bring some stress.
Being bilingual in today’s society puts you ahead of other people who are not bilingual. When I was younger I was able to communicate in spanish with my grandparents and also at times help them understand what some english words or phrases meant. Since their first language was not english they faced the problems that I did when I had first started school. Everywhere I went whether it was a store, the doctor’s office, or even the library I began to realize that there were spanish posters and more spanish speaking workers at these places. Once I got a job and I was able to not only teach and nurture children but also help translate for some families that were not so fluent in english, I began to see the power that being bilingual gives you. Many of my co-workers knew the basics of spanish but did not know how to fully translate or understand the language. Being able to translate another language is a power that can be used to help others, give you more opportunities in the work force and help you be that “one step
