Being A Servant Leader

Improved Essays
Being a servant leader is what every great leader aspires to be. A servant leader is someone who does things for other people while not expecting any recognition in return for their work. As a leader, I try to possess qualities of a servant leader while completing everyday tasks in either my leadership class or during a basketball or volleyball practice. Being a servant leader is stressed in the ASB Leadership class. In this class, all thirty of us complete tasks everyday that go unnoticed and unrecognized by our peers. We do not do these tasks in hopes of being recognized, we do them because we have a passion for serving others. This past month the ASB was called upon to arrange a group of student helpers to assist with the Anacortes School

The text, Servant Leadership, by Robert K. Greenleaf, is a fascinating book that outlines the aspects of a true leader. In relation to my summer internship at Fortress Bank, formerly known as First State Bank of Illinois, I took on the roll of a leader. More importantly, I took on the roll of a servant leader as I become a team player that was a vital cog in the running of the company. Throughout this essay, I will compare and relate the aforementioned text to my summer experience. I enjoyed the author’s dialogue regarding community as I felt that it was comparable to Fortress Bank’s recent rebranding.…

Professor, The book Servant Leadership has been extremely eye opening. I understand that while I may consider myself a leader, I still have a long journey in becoming a servant leader that is capable of serving both others and myself first. I realize that while I have some leadership and entreprenurial skills already, none are truly perfected. Specifically, while my initiative is strong and I am very tenacious, our exercise in class involving placing ourselves on the tenacity scale, made me realize that I can always do more.…

After reading chapter 12, and analyzing the different leadership styles I would have to say my leadership style is servant leadership, with a mix of task-oriented behaviors and people-oriented leader behaviors – depending on the situation. I’m a people person, and love helping people. I’m a motivator, and I like to try to make people’s jobs easier. As a leader I see myself as serving the needs of my team, to provide them the right tools for them to get their job done, and to help them actually enjoy their job. I’m all about helping people to figure out their goals, help them to achieve those goals, and help them through hard times.…

Rachael, You are correct when you stated in your second paragraph that the best practices for servant leadership should build up employees, growing them in their strengths and abilities while creating an environment that encourages great customer service. In addition to the “best practices” that constitutes a secure employee environment, the focus of servant leader managers in organizations needs to shift from processes and outcomes to people and the future, which presents a threefold challenge for the organization. These challenges include (1) how to develop workers and unleash their creative potential, (2) how to create a positive workplace that will attract and retain talented workers, and (3) how to reinforce innovations and risk-taking…

A “servant leader” is one who leads by example and strives for excellence. They do not demand nor act superior, rather exude a balance between leader and servant. Through this balance a “servant leader” achieves a symbiotic relationship; delegating with humility and positivity. A “servant leader” leads with encouragement and always has the best intentions in mind for those around them. I enjoyed reading your post on team, authentic and servant leaderships and your experience with flying with your crew. As I read your post, I agreed with how authentic leadership have roots in transformational leadership. The behaviors coincide with each other and Northhouse (2013) discussion on these leadership behaviors and theories allowed me to reflect on my past employment. As for your life example, I have experiences flying with crewmembers; however, it is with different crewmembers daily, weekly, and sometimes monthly. Being authentic and having servant leadership skills, is critical due to the fact that I fly with federal air marshals, prisoners, law enforcement officers and other crewmembers for a living.…

As much as adopting servant leader habits are crucial, I must admit, except for a few of them I have a long way to go. With time constraints with well-meaning intentions, I find it difficult to follow all of them, even though I know that they are essential for a servant leader. Take for example; taking the time to be completely by myself, other than when I’m studying etc. I find it very challenging, especially these days. Although, I realize I have the need to do that to restore, and refresh, but I don’t.…
