The lifestyle changes of eating healthier, exercising regularly, and training for the marathon reflected the continuous thirst I have had for mentally and physically challenging myself. During my undergraduate years, my classmates and I formed study groups where we encouraged each other to approach class concepts in creative ways, and helped eradicate the competitive nature of science courses. When a 60-year old wheel-chair runner ran passed me, I learned that regardless of a runner’s age or physical capabilities, a person can accomplish anything with a solid mental drive. The diversity I saw in runners was fascinating, and I want to appreciate the similar cultural and ethnic diversity that will be present in the healthcare field. Building a strong foundation of trust that allows people to feel comfortable in discussing their personal health struggles with me largely begins with an understanding of an individual’s background. I want the education that is needed to adequately inform and educate patients about their overall health and I feel that practicing medicine would best provide this
