Being a good nurse
I am often asked, "Why did you choose nursing as a career?" What inspires young people to study to become a nurse? I would like to seize the opportunity to present some reasons for choosing nursing as a profession and how to be a good nurse. Before I present the reasons, I would like to shed light on the history of modern nursing.
Florence Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school in London in 1860. She was known as the "Lady with the Lamp" from her night rounds tending wounded soldiers in the Crimean War that lasted from 1853 to 1856. From the start of mankind, there have always been some who have more knowledge than others about healing and medicine. They had different names like "Medicine men" and "Healers." After they had done their job, it was their helpers that took care of the sick. They were the ancient nurses who were the forerunners of today's modern nurses.
When you study as a nurse, you are required to learn about the different parts of the human body, how they function and what happens when disease affect the health of the individual. You also gain the knowledge of the human mind and how mental health is key to a long and happy life. The reason you learn so much is because you are often the closest person to the patient, and it is your duty to use your knowledge and skills to observe the patient. This combination can present a challenge in many situations. If a nurse has many patients, the time allocated for each patient will be limited. Acting with a professional attitude and behaviour can be seen as lack of genuine caring due to time limitation. On the other hand, spending the time needed with a patient so that the patient would feel well-treated could compromise the time for the other patients.
To create a safe workplace, it is important to have the right routines combined with the right personnel. The workers need to have the necessary experience and knowledge to give professional service to the patients. The doctors need detailed reports which will enable them to use the correct equipment and perform the necessary procedures on the patients. In addition, all workers must take a HSE course, which stands for health, safety and environment. HSE is crucial to the safety to both workers and
