Bed Side Shift Report In Nursing

Decent Essays
Very interesting post regarding your team’s efforts to implement bed-side shift reporting. My organization has been trying to implement bed-side shift report and has experienced the same resistance from the nursing staff. Since my bedside experience is ICU, we already do bedside shift report. There was a time that we taped report, and the team gathered around the table to hear about all the patients on the unit. Even though getting a face-to-face report better, since it allows you to ask questions, I liked knowing what was going on with the rest of the patients on the unit.
I have been part of many nursing teams and they were all different. This include group norms, both good and bad. I found that the nurse manager made all the difference.

Observations and Reflections The nurse leader I worked with that I will described was a manager who was brought into our staffing office to insure our in-house agency was correctly maintaining our staff records and to teach the staff the correct way to do this. DS was a BSN trained nurse with 20 years of nursing experience with the majority of this time in the ER as staff nurse. DS had been a manager for AAS a staffing agency that was very large and assisted in staffing in the Houston Texas area as well as providing staff to different areas of the country in times of disasters, making sure the staff had the correct credentials and training to do this. Her director allowed her to assume most of the directional management of the entire office…

I came from a unit where there was no teamwork amongst different professions, and I now realize that the patients did not always receive the best care they could have. I am a nurse, but now work very closely with the social worker, dietician, physician assistant, and physicians every day. I also am in contact with the patient primary care givers often. We have care conferences for the patients, where all of the team gets together and discusses whatever the patient feels appropriate at that time, and works together to help them solve their problems. This is an amazing time to work together to understand the patients’ needs…

Traditionally hand-off report rituals are based upon one nurse “giving” report to the on-coming nurse. This is not typically an interactive conversation between two nurses. This style of reporting does not give nurses the opportunity to clarify information or ask any questions.…

Hi Sally, my hospital also enforces mandatory bedside report by all nurses during shift change. I actually enjoy performing bedside report because of several reasons. First of all, I am a visual person so being able to see the patient as they describe how their shift went for me, really helps me understand what had happened and what to anticipate on my shift. Second, if the patient is awake, alert, and oriented, they can be involved during the report by adding on anything they felt the nurse missed or answer any questions I ask them during the report. Third, I have a good view of the room, equipment, continuous bedside monitor, medication drips, and other necessary equipment that they need.…

Not only did I job shadow nurses, but I also learned how to different procedures, such as: how to replace a trachea device, take blood pressures, insert feeding tubes, and how to inject vitamins and foods into feeding tubes. Through this, I assured myself that I really wanted to be a nurse.…
