Becoming Homeless

Growing up, I could never have imagined that one day my children and I would be homeless, lost in a prejudiced world. But it happened and I want to write my experience, as it occurs often, but is never addressed.
It was late October 1965 -- the leaves were on the ground, and the town of Douglas was preparing for the cold. We had moved to Douglas a month before and now lived in an apartment building downtown, as it was all I could afford at the time. Working full-time as a nurse in the regional hospital, my children, Michael and Laura, spent their days at school.

“You’ll never leave” is carved faintly into the brick wall of the small jail cell, probably from its last guest. Every day, I started to believe the phrase more and more. I lay on the uncomfortable cot, pretending to be asleep. I’m lonely, but I’m not alone. I can hear him breathing and slowly flipping the pages of the newspaper; I assume it’s…

The night started off as just a normal night. Then as you got deeper in the book many nights became terrifying and miserable. A knock at the door caused me to jump up, off the sofa, in confusion. I walked, quickly as possible, to the front. As I opened it a young officer greeted me causing my breath to catch in my throat. I didn’t believe I had done anything that would cause an officer to come to my home. The man smiled, a thin and uncomfortable smile, quickly and with slight hesitation explained his sudden appearance and pulled a small slip of paper from his back pocket.…

As my team and I consider factors that surround our research topic we have considered the likeliness of being able to access relevant research specific to the areas of homelessness we seek to study. In addition to finding relevant research to support us in our own research, we have also considered who this research could benefit, and if there is a potential of harm imposed on the homeless through the research we would be conducting. We have also considered what best practices in gathering information from our target population would look like, and how to gather information without exploiting our target population. Furthermore, we have considered what this research could ultimately be used for as well as the possibility of better supporting…

The condensation from my breath as I awoke from my normal REM cycle was startling, was I still dreaming? I rose to a seated position and looked around me and let out a sigh, the chevy Malibu was still parked next to my 1994 ford explorer and I was still homeless. The thought rang out in my mind as I gazed around me shivering in the back of the truck parked up on the 3rd floor of the Marcus Theater parking garage in Lincoln Nebraska. I had narrowed finding a place to sleep down to a science, Cruise the Walmart parking lots near 9pm and park in the back where the cameras don't see, around midnight when the parking lot security teams began their shift, Crank the seat forward and head over to the parking garage where Overnight parking after midnight…

Indeed, majority of people prefer to be with their family members rather than sleep on an unknown street, but in fact, homeless people have the same thought as well as ordinary beings. Based on what I experienced, I believe I would like to live in a world without homelessness.…
