In order to become a police officer in the State of New Jersey, you must either have a minimum of 90 college credits and complete the degree before your written exam, or already have a bachelor’s degree. They also allow you to have an associate’s degree and a minimum of 24 months of military experience or 30 college credits and a minimum of 24 months of active duty military service with honorable discharge. These are just the educational requirements to become a police officer in the State of New Jersey. Although becoming a corrections officer does take longer to achieve. Being a police officer, it is your job to serve and protect. You are the ones out on the streets. Making traffic stops, responding to emergency calls, making arrests. It is your job to make sure the safety of the public is there. This is one of the reason there are so many requirements. You need to be able to perform your job with no mistakes. As a probation officer It is your job to help offenders in the best way you possibly can. You’re responsible for helping them find jobs, or treatment for whatever it is they may need. After offenders are released, it is pretty much your job to keep tabs on them. Make sure they are doing whatever it is their probation was assigned to. As a correctional officer, it is your responsibility to take care of the inmates. You maintain the security, do inspections in the prisoners units as well as throughout the building. You are what holds the prison together. You make sure nothing goes wrong, no fights break out, and inmates get help when it is needed. Each of these positons are extremely important, so I do not believe one is more important than the other.
