The beach is great. Most people would agree with that statement. Most people would go there for some fun in the sun and relax after a long day or week of work. However, one day, coastal cities and beaches like Miami, Florida and Miami Beach will cease to exist. Crazy right? Unless you’re a presidential candidate with strong views that the climate isn’t changing, not really. The rising sea levels of our oceans is causing a problem. These rising waters have been causing problems for some years now, but now with new statistics, we are able to see how big of a problem they really are. Many questions can be asked such as why are they rising, what will happen if they continue to rise, is there a way to stop the rising of the sea levels, and why it is a major issue to consider.

In the United States, Louisiana, Florida, North Carolina, California, and South Carolina are the most at risk by high sea levels (Union of Concerned Scientists). The long-term effects of the high sea levels are shoreline erosion and degradation, amplified storm surges, permanent flooding, and saltwater intrusion. Due to high tides and amplified storm surges, storms have become dangerous to humans and animals. It has resulted in the loss of life as well as billions of dollars in damage to coastal property.
