Beach Erosion Lab Report

To sum it all up, on the Venice/Casperson field trip my group were investigating erosion in beaches like Casperson. To get our data, first we made a erosion barrier using dead leaves, sand, and palms, next we made 3 small castles , 3 medium castles and 3 large castles. Then we measured the height and mass, continuing on we took down the barrier while Daniella was ready to use her stopwatch. Last we started the stopwatch and Blair took a movie of the sand castles being washed out by the waves. At the end, our hypothesis was disapproved in this experiment because according to our data it took longest for the waves to weather down the tall sand castle while it was easier for the waves to take down the small sandcastle. In this lab ___ had to determine the properties of five sand samples to compare them to the sand sample from the “crime scence.” The crime scene sand small little pieces of sand all the exact same size and when it was under the micropsope it was crystal and it look like the color of a rainbow but was the exact same. In sample one which was the Hawaii sand this sand was not a match to the crime scene because it had mixed sand with dark brown, light brown, a little bit of of white sand. Sand dune erosion is occurring on the Cronulla coastline due to the coupling of human and natural impacts and is gradually resulting in the beach being less able to be protect itself from natural implications. The constant sand dune erosion is creating a steeper slope this is allowing waves and winds to rapidly remove sand from the dunes. The sand dune erosion is destroying habitats from plants and animals, this is substantially decreasing the biodiversity on the coastal environment. Sand dune erosion is resulting in loose sand to be blown from the dunes because the vegetation has been removed, this is impacting the coastal environment as it is removing all vegetation causing a significant reduction in the biodiversity which is also disrupting the natural processes for the coastal ecosystem. As the sand dunes are eroding since the waves and winds are removing the sand from the shore, the loss of sand results in the beach becoming narrower and closer to the residents.…

In Roxane Gay’s article “Why the Beach Is a Bummer” she explains her outlook on the beach and why it’s a place of discomfort rather than fun. “This is an ideal beach of hot sun, warm sand, crystal-clear water that leaves your skin salted. But it is all too often a mirage”(Gay) the beach isn’t always a place for everyone, and the expectations of the beach often leave people let down or disappointed. As much as I do love the beach and enjoy laying in the sun I agree with Gay’s perspective of the beach to an extent.…

'Beach Burial' by Kenneth Slessor is a poem that illustrates all the poet’s grief for the sailors who died in the great sea battle in the North African Campaign during World War II. The poet thinks that war is not worth it because in the end you are being dehumanised. Slessor uses the technique of imagery in the example ‘To pluck them from the shallows and bury them in the burrows’ as a way of showing how they are being dehumanised and unvalued. The word ‘pluck’ is used to describe how these soldiers are being picked up and thrown around as if they are objects. In conclusion, Slessor conveys his grief in the technique imagery by using words to describe the soldiers as if they were never human.…

Give an example of a question a student might ask that you would be able to test using this model. (2pts) The purpose of this model is to show how sediment from the ocean edge is transferred onto land after a tsunami and that vegetation will cover it over time. This vegetation growth and the many layers of deposit build up from reoccurring tsunamis make it difficult to locate these areas. One question that a student might ask is if a wall is built in the ocean, will it stop the sediment and tsunami from making it to shore?…

A dilemma to Florida’s coastline causing catastrophic issues to communities and habitats is coastal erosion. Coastal erosion is defined as a decrease in shoreline due to a physical event that could either be a short or long-term event. Examples of short-term events are waves and hurricanes; a long-term event could be in the rise in sea level (Pilkey, Cooper, 2004). In Florida, hurricanes are common due to warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico, thus creating massive amount of coastal erosion in Florida’s coastline affecting the communities and habitats. In order to save Florida’s coastline, coastal erosion must be further investigated to be prevented and to save communities and habitats from being destroyed.…

Coastal geomorphology is similar to geomorphology, but the area of focus is on seas and oceans (Davidson-Arnott, 2010). Researches study the development and progression of the coast and how it reacts under particular conditions including sea level changes. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report in 2013 stated that sea level rise will occur in approximately 95% of the ocean area, with estimates that seas will rise between 26 and 82 cm. Therefore, we can assume it is probable that the geomorphological changes on the coast will have a profound impact on the existing landforms. In this essay, I will describe the predicted impacts on coastal geomorphology in relation to sea level rise.…
