Understanding risk factors of a community can help identify how to address any health concerns affecting that community. In San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point, a main concern of the community is high rates of obesity and food insecurity, which may be followed by food deserts in many neighborhoods. This paper will analyze how where one lives can affect one’s health and the public health approach to help solve this problem.
Some argue that people make a choice between eating healthy or unhealthy. However, there are many barriers that can prevent people from accessing healthier foods. For example, in low income communities in San Francisco, accessing healthier foods is difficult because of lack of transportation. Transportation is an issue that many communities face. Therefore, individuals will purchase foods that are easily accessible. Furthermore, most low income neighborhoods suffer from poverty tax, where everything is more expensive, especially healthy foods. For the community in Bayview Hunters Point, inexpensive food choices consist of fast foods or purchasing items at liquor stores.

Hence, although residents live in low income communities, they are aware that there are healthier options for them, it’s just accessing these is the problem. The Good Neighbor Program (GNP) approach towards incentivizing residents for joining their program encouraged other residents to do so. It is easy to implement a program, it is always difficult to change a behavior. The empowerment of youth was a great approach in creating change in the community. Only the community affected would know best what the necessary needs would be to create change in their
